The answer is simple, yes you can. Not many people are fully aware of the fact that there are companies in Tenerife (like ourselves) that rent out mobility scooters to the less mobile of us when they’re on holiday. This blog post aims to clear up that question and many others that you may have about mobility accommodation and renting a mobility scooter from us when staying in Tenerife. Why would I need a mobility scooter in Tenerife?
Many of the older generation manage just fine at home without any help, but they often find it just a little too hot and a little too hilly to get about comfortably in Tenerife, so they opt for a mobility scooter to take the weight of their feet and make getting about much easier.
Are there any areas more suitable than others for the less abled?
As with anywhere, including Tenerife, there’s always going to be areas that don’t accommodate mobility scooters as much as other places. In Tenerife, that’s mainly the north of the island. Orange Badge is based in Los Cristianos in the south of Tenerife, which is the most mobility friendly part of the island, with ramps and even beaches where you can take your electric chair or mobility scooter. Las Americas and Playa de Fañabe are also good for accommodating mobility scooters. Los Gigantes, on the other hand, is absolutely not suitable for those who need mobility equipment, as all pavements have palm trees placed in the middle and the village is situated on a cliffside, making it dangerous to move about on a mobility scooter. The best thing to do is do your research. We have been here for over 16 years now and have a pretty complete understanding of the accommodation here in Tenerife and the requirements of the disabled and less able, so if you do have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask.
Is hiring a scooter better than bringing my own?
If you bring your own mobility scooter, it is sometimes a big worry and can disrupt what you hoped to be a relaxing holiday in the sun. It may get damaged in transit, break down over here, suffer a puncture etc. Because conditions in Tenerife vary a great deal from over in the UK, we often have to pick up scooters with burnt out motors or brakes or failed batteries. Unfortunately, we’re only human and we cannot store parts for every make/model of scooter and if we have to order a spare part it normally takes around 7-10 days to arrive, sometimes even longer, which can be a problem. Not to mention scooters can be costly to fix.
Do I need a Blue Badge? What else do I need to hire a scooter?
If you have a Blue Badge it’s best to bring it. If you don’t then don’t worry, it is not obligatory. If you have a doctors certificate so much the better, but again it is not necessary. When hiring anything from us, all we need is your passport number and that’s it. You can either pay by cash, or Visa / Mastercard. The mobility scooter must be charged every night overnight in a secure, dry place (mostly the hotel receptions).
What models of scooter do you have?
We have a full range of scooters with 3, 4 and even 5 wheels. In the UK, most people prefer 4 wheelers because they believe they can’t be tipped over. In Scandinavia, most prefer a 3 wheeler because they are much easier to steer and turn – each has their own benefit. We also have models to go in the boot of a car, right up to models that can take over 25 stone. The model you can have depends upon your height and weight and where you are staying. Do you rent double scooters?
No, we don’t. They are illegal in most parts of Europe and there is currently a great deal of debate in Tenerife as to whether they should be allowed, and even if they are insured. Many hotels have even banned them from their receptions due to their size, speed and the fact they are not mobility scooters. Whilst they do have a small number of pros, unfortunately, the cons do greatly outweigh them due to safety reasons, so we would not recommend them in any way and we would warn you against using companies that do rent them out.
What are the minimum and maximum hire periods?
Our minimum rental period is three days, our maximum is for as long as you like. The longer you rent any piece of equipment, the cheaper per day it is.
Do you deliver to me or do I have to come to you?
We do normally deliver to you, or if you wish you can arrange to collect from the shop in Los Cristianos. It is also possible to rent for 1 day (10am – 4:30pm) from the office, subject to availability. We deliver all over the south of Tenerife, free of charge in the Las Americas/Fañabe/Los Cristianos areas.
What if I am unsure which product is suitable for me, or if I have any other questions?

How and when do I book?
It is always best to book as soon as you can before you come so you get the best model for your needs and your desired delivery time. Many clients do book year on year so everything’s prepared in advance. You can book by email or over the phone. There is nothing to pay before you come and you pay only when you receive the scooter and you are happy. You can cancel without charge up to 2 days before the date of delivery.
What if the scooter gets damaged?
When we deliver your scooter to you, we will give you full instructions on how to use it and all the do’s and don’t’s. Providing you follow these instructions you have nothing to worry about. Sometimes there are minor bumps or scratches which are inevitable. If they’re not serious and providing we are told about them there is normally not a problem. If you do seriously damage your scooter, or are involved in an accident involving the police then it must be reported to us straight away on our 24-hour emergency number.
What about insurance?
Orange Badge has civil responsibility insurance as all proper businesses have here in Tenerife. However, there can be instances where the client has totally ignored our instructions and caused damage to the scooter, themselves or other property, due to their own negligence. In these circumstances, most people have travel insurance which they can claim on if they have an accident.
